Access to NRS data, other than the data made available on the Open Access part of this website, is permitted only to those who have paid a subscription. How this subscription is charged depends upon the nature of the subscriber.
Publishers of newspapers or magazines would in most cases pay their subscriptions through the NPA or PPA respectively. Details of how to apply to be measured by NRS are shown under Adding your Publication.
Advertising Agencies and Media Independents seeking access to the data should contact the IPA on 020 7235 7020.
Other organisations that are not members of the NPA, PPA or IPA may gain access to the data on payment of a subscription direct to the NRS. Rates for these direct subscriptions are shown below.
All data derived from the National Readership Survey are subject to copyright. It should be clearly understood that no subscriber to NRS may sell the data to another party.
| Standard annual subscription | £3,880 |
| Special rate for Universities, Colleges, Schools and Libraries | £1,140 |
Once a subscription has been taken out, the subscriber is given access to the Subscriber Only section of the NRS website. This section includes a report containing 260 tables of readership and marketing data, updated four times a year for data periods ending March, June, September and December.
As well as access to the data on the NRS website, all subscribers are sent the following hard copy reports:
| Data Period | Issued | |
|---|---|---|
| Volume 1 | July 2007-June 2008 | October 2008 |
| Volume 2 | January-December 2008 | March 2009 |
Additional copies of the Volumes are available for £1,940 for the second and each subsequent copy (£570 for Universities, Colleges, Schools and Libraries)
NRS reports and publications are VAT zero rated.
While the standard NRS reports contain a wealth of information, many subscribers prefer the flexibility of conducting their own analyses of the data. There are two ways of doing this. Firstly, a subscriber may commission an analysis from one of the NRS-authorised computer bureaux listed below. NRS will levy a 10% royalty payment, charged through the bureaux, for each such analysis commissioned.
Alternatively, subscribers who make frequent use of the data may prefer to take out a Special Analysis Licence, which gives them unlimited access to the data, allowing them to run analyses themselves, using software specially designed for the purpose by the NRS authorised computer bureaux.
Special Analysis Licence holders must first purchase a subscription, but on purchase of the license they will not be required to pay any further royalties. The bureaux charge for their services, but this is a matter between the bureaux and their clients and does not involve NRS.
| VAT @ 17.5% | Total | ||
|---|---|---|---|
| Annual Charge | £11,080 | £1,962 | £13,042 |
| Special rates for Universities, Colleges, Schools and Libraries | £1,110 | £194 | £1,304 |
NRS Ltd will take necessary steps to ensure that information from the Survey is not misused, in particular in interpreting results obtained from small samples.
The NRS has authorised a number of computer bureaux to provide special analyses to subscribers and licence holders. These bureaux are not licensed to provide analyses for non-subscribers. The bureaux currently authorised by the NRS are:
